Don't be THAT passenger. These 12 unwritten rules make flying better for everyone — including you.
1. The Armrest Rule
Window gets the wall + armrest. Aisle gets extra legroom + armrest. Middle seat gets BOTH armrests. This is the unwritten social contract of flying.
2. Seat Reclining
You have the right to recline, but glance back first. During meals, keep your seat upright. On 1-hour domestic flights, maybe just don't recline at all.
3. Overhead Bin Space
Use the bin directly above YOUR row. Don't stash your bag 10 rows ahead because you boarded early — you're stealing someone else's space.
4. Stand Up When Letting Someone Out
If your row-mate needs to use the washroom, stand up properly. Don't just twist your legs sideways — it's awkward for everyone.
5. Headphone Volume
If the person next to you can hear your music/video through your headphones, it's too loud. And NEVER play audio on speakers. Ever.
6. Don't Rush to Stand Up
The plane has landed, but the doors are closed. Standing up immediately just means you'll stand hunched under the overhead bin for 5 minutes. Relax.
7. Window Shade Etiquette
If the cabin crew asks shades down for landing/takeoff, comply. During flight, the window seat person controls the shade, but be considerate if the sun is blinding your neighbor.
8. Be Kind to Crew
Say please, say thank you. They're serving 180 people in a metal tube at 35,000 feet. A smile goes a long way.
9. Keep Your Shoes On
Especially on short domestic flights. Nobody wants to smell your feet in a sealed cabin. If you must take shoes off, keep your socks on.
10. Don't Hog the Washroom
On domestic flights with 1-2 washrooms and 180 passengers, keep it quick. 3-5 minutes max.
11. Be Mindful of Strong Food
That biryani you packed smells amazing to you, but the whole cabin now smells like it. Save strong-smelling food for the airport.
12. Help Others with Luggage
If you see someone struggling with their bag, offer to help. It costs nothing and makes everyone's day better.
