Updated June 25, 2026 | 4 min read

Want to snap that window seat sunrise or post an airport selfie? Here's what's actually allowed and what could get you in trouble.

What's Allowed

  • Selfies in terminal: General areas, boarding gates, lounges — all fine
  • Window seat photos: Clouds, landscapes, wing shots — completely legal
  • Food photos: Your inflight meal — Instagram away
  • Boarding pass photos: Just blur the barcode before posting online

What's NOT Allowed

  • 🚫 Security check area: Strictly NO photography at security screening
  • 🚫 Cockpit: Never photograph the cockpit or crew operating area
  • 🚫 ATC/Runway area: Airport restricted zones — security violation
  • 🚫 Other passengers: Without consent — privacy violation
  • ⚠️ During takeoff/landing: All devices must be in airplane mode, but photos are technically OK if phone is in airplane mode

Airline-Specific Rules

  • 📱 IndiGo: Photography allowed inside cabin, no crew photos without consent
  • 📱 Air India: Same — cabin OK, no cockpit, no security areas
  • 📸 Professional cameras: DSLR/mirrorless allowed as carry-on, no tripods in cabin

Pro Tips for Great Flight Photos

  1. 🪟 Clean your window: Use a microfiber cloth before shooting
  2. 🌅 Best time: Sunrise/sunset flights = golden light at 35,000 ft
  3. 📱 HDR mode: Handles the bright sky + dark wing contrast
  4. 🧴 Lens against glass: Press phone against window to reduce reflections
