Duty Free — What's Actually Cheaper (And What's a Trap)

Updated June 25, 2026 | 4 min read

Duty free shops look glamorous. But are they actually cheaper? Sometimes yes, often no. Here's what's worth buying at Indian airports.

Worth Buying ✅

  • 🥃 Liquor: 30-50% cheaper than retail. Best savings at duty free
  • 💨 Perfumes: 20-30% savings on international brands
  • 🍫 Chocolates: Toblerone, Lindt — 20-40% cheaper in bulk
  • 🚬 Cigarettes: Significant tax savings (if applicable)

Skip These ❌

  • 📱 Electronics: Usually same price or more expensive than online (Amazon/Flipkart)
  • 👜 Fashion/Bags: Rarely discounted. Better deals during sales online
  • 🧴 Cosmetics: Compare with Nykaa first — often same price

Allowance Limits

  • 🇮🇳 Returning to India: ₹50,000 duty-free allowance per person
  • 🥃 Liquor: 2 litres per person
  • 🚬 Cigarettes: 100 sticks or 25 cigars
