Flying for the first time can feel overwhelming — unfamiliar airport procedures, security checks, and the boarding process can create anxiety. This complete guide walks you through every step of air travel in India, from booking your ticket to collecting your luggage at the destination. By the end, you'll feel confident and prepared for your first flight.

Step-by-Step: Your First Flight Journey

1. Book Your Flight (Days Before)

Search for flights on TheBookFlight. Choose a direct flight for your first trip — avoid connections. Book at least 2-3 weeks in advance for better prices. You'll receive a booking confirmation with PNR via email and SMS.

2. Web Check-in (48 Hours Before)

Complete web check-in on the airline's website or app. Select your seat (window for views, aisle for legroom). Download your boarding pass — you can show it on your phone or print it.

3. Arrive at the Airport (2.5 Hours Before)

For domestic flights, arrive at least 2 hours before departure. First-time flyers should add 30 extra minutes. Carry your photo ID (Aadhaar, passport, voter ID, or driving licence) and boarding pass.

4. Enter the Terminal

Show your boarding pass (on phone or printed) and photo ID at the airport entrance. Security staff will verify and let you in. If you have DigiYatra set up, you can enter through the DigiYatra lane without showing documents.

5. Baggage Check-in (If Needed)

If you have check-in baggage, go to the airline counter. Show your ID and boarding pass. Your bags are tagged and sent to the aircraft. Keep the baggage tag receipt safe — you'll need it to collect bags at arrival.

6. Security Check

Join the security queue. Place your cabin bag, belt, watch, phone, wallet, and metal items in the tray. Walk through the metal detector. Collect your items from the tray on the other side. This takes 5-15 minutes.

7. Wait at the Gate

Check departure screens for your gate number. Go to the gate area and wait. Boarding usually starts 30-45 minutes before departure. Use this time to use the restroom, buy water, or relax.

8. Board the Aircraft

When boarding is announced, join the queue. Show your boarding pass to the staff. Walk to your seat (row numbers are on the overhead bins). Store cabin bag in the overhead bin or under the seat in front. Sit down and fasten your seat belt.

9. During the Flight

Keep seat belt fastened during takeoff, landing, and when the sign is on. Cabin crew will demonstrate safety procedures. They'll serve water/snacks (free or paid depending on airline). Use the call button above your seat for assistance.

10. Arrival & Baggage Collection

After landing, wait for the seat belt sign to turn off before standing. Collect your cabin bag. Follow "Arrivals" signs to the baggage carousel. Find your flight number on the screens, wait for your bag, and exit through the main gate.

Baggage Rules

What Goes in Cabin Bag (Hand Luggage)

  • Allowed: Wallet, phone, charger, medicines, snacks, empty water bottle, laptop, book, change of clothes
  • Weight limit: 7 kg for most airlines (IndiGo, SpiceJet, Akasa). Air India allows 8 kg
  • Size: Must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front

What Goes in Check-in Bag

  • Allowed: Everything not restricted — clothes, toiletries (full-size), gifts, souvenirs
  • Weight limit: 15 kg (economy) to 25 kg depending on airline and ticket type
  • Tip: Weigh your bag at home to avoid excess baggage charges at the airport

Not Allowed in Cabin: Liquids over 100ml (water, perfume, shampoo — buy water after security), sharp objects (scissors, nail cutters, knives), lighters, matchboxes, power banks over 100Wh.

Security Check: What to Expect

  1. Join the queue — Follow signs to "Security Check" after entering the terminal
  2. Prepare your tray — Remove belt, watch, wallet, phone, coins, keys, and metal items. Put them in the provided tray
  3. Laptop in separate tray — Take your laptop out of your bag and place it flat in a separate tray
  4. Liquids in clear bag — If carrying liquids (under 100ml each), put them in a clear zip-lock bag
  5. Walk through detector — Walk through the metal detector when asked. If it beeps, security may do a quick pat-down check
  6. Collect your items — Pick up your trays from the conveyor belt on the other side

During the Flight

Ear Pressure

During takeoff and landing, you may feel pressure in your ears. This is normal. Chewing gum, swallowing, yawning, or drinking water helps equalise the pressure. It lasts only a few minutes.

Turbulence

Turbulence (shaking of the aircraft) is completely normal and safe. It's like hitting bumps on a road. Keep your seat belt on, and the shaking usually stops within minutes. Pilots are trained to handle turbulence — it's not dangerous.

Using the Restroom

Aircraft restrooms are at the front and back of the plane. Wait for the "Fasten Seat Belt" sign to turn off before going. The door has a lock indicator — push to lock. Don't use during takeoff or landing.

Food & Drinks

  • Full-service airlines (Air India): Free meals and drinks on most flights
  • Low-cost airlines (IndiGo, SpiceJet, Akasa): Paid meals — you can pre-order during booking or buy on the flight
  • You can bring your own snacks — Dry snacks, sandwiches, fruits are allowed
  • Water: Buy after security check. Cabin crew also provides water (sometimes free)

Frequently Asked Questions

How early should I reach the airport for my first flight?

For domestic flights, arrive at least 2-2.5 hours before departure. First-time flyers should add 30 extra minutes to account for finding counters, security queues, and gate navigation. For international flights, arrive 3-3.5 hours early.

Can I carry water through airport security?

You cannot carry water bottles (or any liquid over 100ml) through security. However, you can carry an empty bottle and fill it from water fountains after security. You can also buy water from shops inside the terminal after security.

What happens if I miss my flight?

If you miss your flight, contact the airline immediately. Some airlines allow rebooking on the next available flight with a change fee. Others may mark it as a no show with no refund. Contact TheBookFlight support for help with rebooking.

Is turbulence dangerous?

No, turbulence is not dangerous. Modern aircraft are designed to handle severe turbulence safely. It is simply the aircraft moving through areas of uneven air, similar to a car hitting bumps on a road. Keep your seat belt on for comfort and safety.

Can I use my phone on the plane?

You must switch your phone to Airplane Mode before takeoff. In airplane mode, you can still use your phone for photos, music, games, and downloaded content. Some airlines offer Wi-Fi (paid) which you can use in airplane mode with Wi-Fi enabled.

What do I do if I feel sick during the flight?

Airsickness is common for first-time flyers. Use the air vent above your seat for fresh air. Focus on a fixed point. There are airsickness bags in the seat pocket. If you feel very unwell, press the call button for cabin crew assistance. They are trained to help.
