The Great Recline Debate — Settled Once and For All

Updated June 25, 2026 | 3 min read

Nothing starts more arguments on a flight than someone reclining their seat into your laptop. Here's what's actually acceptable — based on unwritten rules and common sense.

The Rules

  1. You CAN recline: The button exists for a reason. It's your right
  2. 🤝 BUT check behind: A quick glance before reclining is basic courtesy
  3. 🍽️ NOT during meals: Recline UP when meal service is happening
  4. 🛬 NOT during landing: Seatback must be upright (airline rule, not suggestion)
  5. Short flights under 2 hrs: Honestly? Don't bother. It's not worth the conflict
  6. 🌙 Red-eye flights: Everyone reclines. It's expected

The Armrest Debate (Bonus!)

  • 💺 Window: You get the wall and ONE armrest
  • 💺 Aisle: You get legroom and ONE armrest
  • 💺 Middle seat: BOTH armrests. That's the unwritten rule. The middle seat person suffers enough — give them the armrests!

💡 The Golden Rule

Would you want the person in front of you doing what you're about to do? If yes, go ahead. If no, maybe don't. Flying is a shared experience — a little courtesy makes everyone's 2 hours better.
