Flight Ticket for Visa — Book, Don't Book, or Dummy?

Updated June 25, 2026 | 5 min read

Many embassies ask for a "confirmed flight itinerary" for visa applications. But should you buy a full ticket before getting your visa? Here's the smart approach.

What Embassies Actually Want

  • 📄 Most embassies: Want a "travel itinerary" — NOT a confirmed paid ticket
  • 📄 Schengen (Europe): Confirmed reservation — but refundable or hold booking works
  • 📄 USA (B1/B2): Do NOT buy ticket before visa interview — they explicitly say this
  • 📄 UK: Travel itinerary sufficient — no confirmed booking needed

Your Options

MethodCostRisk
Fully refundable ticket₹15,000-₹30,000Zero (full refund)
Airline hold (24-72 hrs)FreeExpires quickly
Dummy ticket service₹300-₹800May be rejected

⚠️ Warning About Dummy Tickets

Some embassies verify PNR numbers. If your "dummy ticket" has a fake PNR, your visa can be rejected AND you may be flagged for future applications. Use airline holds or refundable tickets instead.

Our Recommendation

  1. 🥇 Best: Book a fully refundable Air India ticket — cancel after visa
  2. 🥈 Good: Use airline 24-hr hold if visa interview is soon
  3. 🥉 Risky: Dummy ticket services — only for low-stakes applications
