Monsoon Flying — What to Expect and How to Prepare

Updated June 25, 2026 | 4 min read

June to September is India's monsoon season — and the most disrupted period for flights. Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai airports are especially affected. Here's your survival guide.

What Happens During Monsoon

  • ⛈️ Delays: Average 30-60 min delays at BOM, CCU, MAA during peak monsoon
  • 🔄 Diversions: Flights diverted to alternate airports when visibility drops
  • 💨 More turbulence: Thunderstorms cause moderate turbulence — completely normal
  • Cancellations: Rare but happen during extreme weather events

How to Prepare

  • 🌅 Book morning flights: Weather disruptions build through the day. 6-9 AM flights are least affected
  • 📱 Track live status: Check airline app 2 hours before departure
  • 🧳 Carry-on only: If diverted, checked bags may arrive late
  • 💰 Travel insurance: Covers hotel + meals during weather delays
  • 🏨 Buffer day: Don't book critical meetings on arrival day during peak monsoon

Your Rights During Weather Delays

  • ⚠️ Weather = "extraordinary circumstance": Airlines are NOT required to compensate for weather delays
  • 🍽️ But they must provide: Meals if delay >2 hrs, hotel if overnight — full rights guide
  • 🔄 Refund or rebook: If cancelled, you're entitled to full refund or next available flight
