Hub Strategy — Guwahati is Key

Guwahati (GAU) is the gateway to all of Northeast India. Most travelers fly to Guwahati first, then:

  • Shillong: 3-hour drive from Guwahati (no reliable direct flights)
  • Kaziranga: 4.5-hour drive from Guwahati (one-horned rhinos!)
  • Tawang: 2-day road trip from Guwahati (via Bomdila/Dirang)
  • Cherrapunji/Mawsynram: 4-hour drive via Shillong

Best Season

  • October-April: Best time for most of NE India. Clear skies, comfortable temperatures.
  • March-April: Cherry blossoms in Shillong! Spring festivals across the region.
  • December: Hornbill Festival in Nagaland (one of India's best cultural festivals)
  • Monsoon (May-Sep): Heavy rainfall. Cherrapunji/Mawsynram see extreme rain. Roads can be damaged.

Must-Visit Experiences

  • Living Root Bridges: Meghalaya — trek to double-decker root bridges in Nongriat
  • Kaziranga National Park: One-horned rhinoceros safari
  • Tawang Monastery: Second-largest Buddhist monastery in the world
  • Loktak Lake: Manipur — floating islands (phumdis)
  • Hornbill Festival: Nagaland's 10-day tribal celebration (December)
  • Dawki River: Crystal-clear river on India-Bangladesh border

Permits & Tips

  • Inner Line Permit (ILP): Required for Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur. Apply online.
  • No ILP needed: Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Sikkim
  • Cash is king: UPI works in cities, but carry cash for smaller towns
  • Road conditions: Many roads are narrow and hilly — plan extra time for drives
  • Respect local customs: Each state has unique tribal cultures — dress modestly in villages
