Pondicherry (Puducherry) is India's French connection — colonial architecture, boulangeries, pristine beaches, and a zen vibe. Getting there by air is easy via Chennai.
How to Reach Pondicherry by Air
Pondicherry has a tiny airport with very limited flights. The practical approach:
- Best option: Fly to Chennai (MAA) → 2.5h drive/bus to Pondicherry (150 km)
- Direct flights: IndiGo operates limited flights to Pondicherry from Hyderabad and Bangalore
- Chennai to Pondy: SETC government bus (Rs. 200-400) or Ola/Uber (Rs. 2,000-3,000)
Must-Do in Pondicherry
- French Quarter (White Town): Colorful colonial streets, cafés, boutiques
- Promenade Beach: Sunset walks along the seafront
- Auroville: The "City of Dawn" — spiritual community with the Matrimandir
- Scuba diving: Best diving on India's east coast
- French food: Croissants, crêpes, and café au lait at Baker Street or Café des Arts
Best Season
October-March is ideal. Avoid monsoon (Oct-Dec can have cyclonic rain). Weekdays are less crowded than weekends.
