Small mistakes during flight booking can cost you thousands of rupees or even your trip. Here are the 10 most common mistakes and how to avoid them.
1. Spelling Your Name Wrong
The name on your ticket must exactly match your government ID (Aadhaar, passport). Even small differences like "Rajesh" vs "Rajesh Kumar" can cause problems at check-in. Airlines charge ₹500-₹3,000 for name corrections.
Fix: Double-check every character before confirming. Copy-paste from your ID if possible.
2. Booking the Wrong Date
This happens more often than you'd think, especially when booking late at night. Selecting June 15 instead of July 15, or picking a departure date after your return date.
Fix: Always verify the full date including day, month, and year before payment.
3. Not Checking Baggage Rules
Budget airlines charge ₹1,000-₹3,000 for checked baggage if you don't add it during booking. Adding it at the airport is even more expensive.
Fix: Add baggage during booking. It's always cheaper than at the airport counter.
4. Ignoring Cancellation Policy
The cheapest fare usually has the strictest cancellation policy — sometimes non-refundable. If your plans might change, a slightly more expensive flexible fare can save you money.
Fix: Read the cancellation terms before booking. Choose a flexible fare if your travel dates are uncertain.
5. Not Doing Web Check-In
If you don't web check-in, you might not get your preferred seat and could face longer queues at the airport. Some airlines charge for airport check-in.
Fix: Do web check-in 48 hours before departure. It's free and takes 2 minutes.
6. Booking Too Late
Last-minute domestic flights can cost 3-5x more than advance bookings. A Delhi-Mumbai flight that costs ₹3,500 three weeks out might cost ₹12,000 the day before.
Fix: Book domestic flights 2-3 weeks in advance. For peak season, book 4-6 weeks ahead.
7. Not Comparing Across Airlines
Prices for the same route at the same time can vary by ₹2,000-₹5,000 between airlines. Don't book the first option you see.
Fix: Compare prices across IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet, Vistara, and Akasa before booking.
8. Forgetting to Check Terminal
Delhi airport has 3 terminals (T1, T2, T3), Mumbai has 2 (T1, T2). Going to the wrong terminal means missing your flight.
Fix: Check your terminal on the boarding pass or airline app. Arrive at the correct terminal.
9. Not Carrying Valid ID
PAN card, credit card, and college ID are NOT valid for airport entry. You need a government-issued photo ID — Aadhaar, passport, voter ID, or driving license.
Fix: Always carry at least one valid photo ID. For international flights, carry your passport.
10. Making Multiple Payment Attempts
When payment fails, many travelers immediately try again — only to find they've been charged twice. The first transaction might still be processing.
Fix: Wait at least 30 minutes after a failed payment before trying again. Check your bank account first.
