Flight Etiquette Guide — Do's and Don'ts Every Indian Traveler Should Know

Updated June 25, 2026 | 6 min read

Flying is a shared experience. Following basic etiquette makes the journey pleasant for everyone — especially on Indian domestic flights where space is limited and flights can be crowded.

✅ Boarding Etiquette

  • Wait for your zone: Board only when your zone/row is called. Jumping the queue delays everyone.
  • Keep the aisle clear: Store your bag quickly and sit down. Don't block the aisle arranging your things.
  • Cabin baggage limit: Stick to one bag + one personal item. Don't bring oversized bags that don't fit in the overhead bin.
  • Help others: If you see someone struggling with their bag, offer to help.

✅ Seat Etiquette

  • The middle seat gets both armrests: This is the unwritten rule. Window gets the wall and view, aisle gets the legroom, middle gets both armrests.
  • Recline carefully: Always check behind you before reclining. On short domestic flights (under 2 hours), consider not reclining at all.
  • Stay in your space: Keep your elbows within your seat area. Don't spread out.
  • Window shade: Close the shade during meal service and when others are sleeping.

✅ Noise Etiquette

  • Use headphones: Never play music, videos, or games on speaker. Always use earphones or headphones.
  • Keep conversations low: Especially on early morning and late night flights.
  • Phone calls: Before takeoff and after landing, keep phone calls brief and quiet.
  • Children: If traveling with kids, bring activities, snacks, and headphones to keep them engaged.

✅ Food & Drink Etiquette

  • Avoid strong-smelling food: The cabin is sealed — strong odors affect everyone.
  • Don't bring alcohol onboard: Drinking your own alcohol on a flight is prohibited in India.
  • Clean up: Don't leave trash everywhere. Use the seat pocket bag or ask crew for a disposal bag.

✅ Lavatory Etiquette

  • Keep it quick: On busy flights, others are waiting. Don't use the lavatory for extended grooming.
  • Clean after use: Wipe the sink, check the seat. Leave it as you'd want to find it.
  • Use the seat belt sign: Return to your seat when the sign is on.

❌ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Standing up immediately after landing: Wait for the seatbelt sign to turn off. The plane hasn't reached the gate yet.
  • Clapping when the plane lands: While not rude, it's not necessary. Save the applause for turbulent landings in bad weather!
  • Pushing past people during deplaning: Wait for the rows ahead to exit first.
  • Taking shoes off without socks: Keep your feet covered. The person next to you will thank you.
  • Being rude to crew: Flight attendants are safety professionals, not servants. A "please" and "thank you" goes a long way.
