Medical Emergency on a Flight — What Happens & What You Should Know

Updated June 25, 2026 | 7 min read

Medical emergencies on flights are rare but important to understand. Indian airlines are well-prepared with trained crew, medical equipment, and ground support. Here's what happens and what you can do.

What Airlines Do During a Medical Emergency

  1. Crew assessment: Flight attendants are trained in first aid and will assess the situation
  2. Doctor on board: The crew will ask over the PA if any medical professionals are on board
  3. First aid kit: All commercial aircraft carry first aid kits with basic medications, bandages, and equipment
  4. Enhanced medical kit: Larger aircraft carry enhanced kits with injectable medications, IV supplies, and an AED (defibrillator)
  5. Ground medical support: The pilot contacts ground-based medical services (MedAire, MedLink) for real-time doctor consultation
  6. Diversion: If needed, the captain may divert to the nearest airport for emergency medical care
